Sunset Valley has become synonymous with shopping centers in South Austin. Sunset Valley Village features big box stores Nordstrom Rack, Petco, World Market, Old Navy, Michael's, Kohl's, and Barnes & Noble. Surrounding the shopping center are many restaurants such as IM Thai Cuisine, BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse and many boutique stores. The shopping center is set amongst a unique taste of the past generation, with old barns and farm houses on the outskirts of the complex. Villas at Sunset Valley might not come on acreage lots, but they are very large and have contemporary floorplans. Villas at Sunset Valley homes were constructed by the builder Mercedes Premier Homes and were erected in the mid to late 2000s.

Sunset Valley students attend the Austin School District. The majority of students go to Sunset Valley Elementary School, Covington Middle School, and Crockett High School. A very small north section attends Oak Hill Elementary School, O. Henry Middle School, and Austin High School.
