The Onion Creek Club was founded in 1974 by three-time Masters Champion, Jimmy Demaret. In 1996, Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore added an additional nine new holes to Demaret's original golf course design. The course is massive and wide-open and is lined with some of the largest trees in Austin. The course now offers a sprawling 27-holes for it's members. Onion Creek Club is the birthplace of the Senior PGA Tour, hosting the first ever event in 1978. As a private club, all activities are for member's only and not open to the public. Besides golf, Onion Creek Club offers tennis, fitness center, aquatics center, large clubhouse, bar and club restaurant, and summer camps.

In the past few years, Onion Creek community has been the victim of flash floods and cost millions in property damage. The City of Austin has reacted by designating several parts of the community inside a new floodplain. The City of Austin has purchased many homes in Onion Creek that are now considered in the floodplain (Buyout info). A study performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined the properties unable to be saved by other potential solutions and prone to risk by major flooding. These homes were the ones the City of Austin has elected to purchase. Onion Creek is a wonderful community full of homes that have so much character and architectural merit. These flooded homes should not detract from the overall beauty of the Onion Creek community as the homes determined to be at most risk for flooding have been purchased by the city.
