Cherrywood derives it's name from Cherrywood Road, the north-south route which passes through the community. The homes in Cherrywood and French Place are some of the most charming bungalows and ranch-style homes in the city. With the majority of homes in Cherrywood and French Place being the small bungalow-type properties, the average size of homes in the neighborhood is about 1,350 sqft. Cherrywood houses range from 550 sqft to 4500 sqft, but the larger homes in the community are extremely rare. The streets are full of mature trees and well-preserved or remodeled properties. The majority of houses in Cherrywood and French Place were built from the mid-1930s through 1950s, but with some homes torn down due to poor condition, there are homes built in the 1990s and 2000s as well.

The Cherrywood Neighborhood Association (CNA) formed in the 1980s, and paved the way for preserving the rich heritage the popular East Austin neighborhood prides itself on. The Cherrywood Neighborhood Association is a member of the broader Austin Neighborhoods Council which considers citywide issues that may effect the community. It's evident the resident's of Cherrywood and French Place deeply care about the look and feel of their community, despite being so close to the ever growing urban sprawl of Downtown Austin. Cherrywood, University Park, and French Place houses are some of the nicest and most desirable in East Austin, as well as Central Austin. So the Cherrywood Neighborhood Association has done an excellent job in maintaining the community.

Patterson Park is a 9 acre park at the north end of Cherrywood and French Place, just off of Airport Blvd. Here they have a pool, tennis, playground, and pavilion for picnics. It's an excellent place to play within the community. Across Airport Blvd. in Mueller, there is the gorgeous Mueller Lake Park and Browning Hangar where musical events and galas are held, as well as The Thinkery, a super fun exploratory facility for children. The French Place and Cherrywood neighborhood is close to many local eateries as well including, Hoover's Cooking, Thunderbird Coffee, Dai Due, and Mi Madre's. Just on the other side of I35 is the University of Texas. All of this amounts to why French Place and Cherrywood are a targeted community by many home buyers.

The Cherrywood and French Place communities are listed under formal subdivision names such as Giles Place, Upland, Lafayette Heights, Avalon, and University Park.
