What is now known as Clarksville, originally was a 365 acre piece of land owned by Texas Governor Elisha Pease, who sold it in 1871 to Charles Clark. Charles Clark, an emancipated slave, established the community which now carries his name. Clarksville in Central Austin is the oldest surviving freedomtown west of the Mississippi River. A freedomtown is a settlement founded by former African American slaves after the Civil War. In 1968, Mopac Expressway was constructed and cut off the furthest west section of the community, but most original homes are still standing. Clarksville and Old West Austin is one of the most historic residential districts in Austin and was added to the National Register for Historic Places in 1976.

The Clarksville area appeals to a wide range of home buyers such as artists, families, singles, young professionals and established professionals. Essentially, anyone that likes to be close to Downtown Austin. You can walk to many hotspots in the area including bars, restaurants, Whole Foods Market, and Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake). The Clarksville / Old West Austin community is very popular and Butler Park (formerly Town Lake Park) with jogging trails are always full of Austinites keeping in shape. Butler Park features 21 acres in the shadow of Austin's growing cityscape. Butler Park provides goers with a dog area, exercise equipment, a 35-foot hill, and a plaza space. The park also features Butler Park Pitch & Putt. Butler Park is joined with Auditorium Shores at Town Lake Metro Park on the opposite side of Riverside Drive.

Duncan Park within Clarksville is a beautiful place to get some recreation within the urban surroundings. With large trees and the Shoal Creek Greenbelt Park cutting through Duncan Park it's a serene natural setting within Downtown Austin. There are several picnic areas and a large multi-use field. The most notable feature of Duncan Park is Ninth Street BMX, a 25+ year old BMX track in the forest where dirt ramps and hills are put to use by bicycling acrobats. The BMX track was built and is maintained by local riders.
